Meet Dr. Al Nicolosi ’80

Nicolosi is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon who worked in the field for 30 years.

Dr. Al Nicolosi ’80, who was a premed natural sciences major, came to Muhlenberg without ever visiting the campus. He chose the College purely for the strong reputation of its premed program.

“Muhlenberg gave me an atmosphere where I could thrive,” says Nicolosi, who went on to attend Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “I was always in competition with myself. I was always striving to be the best that I could.”

After finishing med school, Nicolosi moved to Milwaukee and served on the faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 2016, he joined SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison. During the course of his career, he performed more than 50 heart transplants and implanted a variety of cardiac support devices.

“There have been so many Muhlenberg graduates that have done very special things in the areas of science and medicine,” he says, “and to be recognized among them is gratifying.”
