Jonathan Phillips has stepped down after serving for 21 years as the executive director for Groundwork Elizabeth, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to building more sustainable communities. During his term, the organization coordinated efforts to design and build an Elizabeth River Trail according to an Olmsted design, established a network of urban gardens to address food security, created programs and projects for underserved youth, and began the long-term goal of assuring a safe and clean environment for all. Prior to the Groundwork position, Jonathan owned and managed a family bicycle business established in 1904 by his wife’s grandfather. He plans to continue creating a future in which everyone’s environment is clean and healthy and offers opportunities to thrive.
