James Smith has retired after 50 years as an attorney with the appellate section of the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender. During his career, James argued appeals in the Supreme Court of the United States, the Third Circuit Federal Court Of Appeals, the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and various lower courts. A number of those cases involved challenges to New Jersey’s 1982 death penalty statute, which was eventually repealed in 2007.
